A Lightning Path Medicine Wheel Journey

On a recent trip to my home town of Calgary, I stopped in at some of my favourite old stomping grounds west of the city. These included Stoney Indian campground and Nakoda Lodge. At the former, in addition to a sizeable herd of buffalo, there exists a humble medicine wheel established years ago under the spiritual leadership of native elder Albert Lightning.

There are 4 entranceways into the medicine wheel, one at each cardinal direction. Respectfully, and with prayerful tobacco offerings at the eastern portal, I had only just entered the wheel when I was immediately inspired to slowly walk Moon-wise around the circle whilst seeing its many stones as metaphors for the years of my life. One-by-one, the years ticked off and a rush of memories flashed into my inner eye: growing up in Calgary, the sudden death of my sister Debbie when I was 11, my first bicycle……they just kept coming.

Now, there was in my mind, the presence of an astrological metaphor for this wee journey down memory lane and that had to do with the orbit of Uranus around the Sun, the cycle long taken by astrologers to be the one most representative of the duration of a human life in the modern era. According to this astrological metaphor, about which I have written extensively on my Seasons of Uranus website, there are four distinct seasons to a human life. By consciously tracking our passage through those seasons, we gain an objectivity unavailable through a less mindful life passage.

Back at the medicine wheel, fortified with this archetypal knowledge, I arrived at the northern gateway with the realization that I was metaphorically moving from the Spring of my life, into Summer. That part of the wheel aligned with age 21 had been reached and I was about to enter a totally new era. This awareness was vivified with recollection of a profound mystical experience I had at that age, an experience that caused me to completely reorient my attitude from one of hapless victim of life, to one of self-empowered human seeking fulfillment as a creative soul!

I continued slowly around the wheel, leaving prayers of gratitude and tobacco offerings at the Fall and Winter gateways. Once again, as at age 21, the turning points of age 42 and 63 brought forth memory of significant life-events. Entry into the Winter season was particularly poignant, aligning with the sudden death of my Mother, buried as she was, on the day I turned 63. Painfully, death had once again affirmed itself as undeniable reality in my life! Thankfully, and with timely and mysterious communication with my deceased Mother weeks after she had passed, I am even more acutely aware of a Vast Expanse of consciousness unlimited by manifestation in physical form. It is to those vast realms that I now turn more and more frequently for inspiration and sustenance on this grand journey we call life.
